For Supreme Power and Wisdom – Maa Siddhidatri Puja

The ninth and final day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Siddhidatri, the Goddess who blesses her devotees with divine powers and ultimate spiritual fulfillment. Her name comes from Siddhi (spiritual powers) and Datri (giver), making her the benevolent bestower of strength, wisdom, and perfection. On this sacred day, devotees not only conclude their nine-day journey of devotion but also celebrate Navami, a day of spiritual completion and divine blessings.

Who Is Maa Siddhidatri?

Maa Siddhidatri sits gracefully on a lotus or a lion, radiating serenity and divinity. She has four arms holding a mace, chakra, lotus, and shankha, symbolizing her supreme power.

She is worshipped not only by humans but also by devas, sages, and even Lord Shiva, who is believed to have attained perfection and completeness through her blessings. She embodies the union of spiritual strength and divine grace.

At the very beginning of the universe, when creation had yet to unfold, Lord Rudra turned to Adi-Parashakti, the eternal and supreme power, for guidance. Adi-Parashakti, in her primal essence, was without form—limitless, boundless, and beyond human perception.

Moved by Lord Rudra’s devotion, the Divine Mother chose to manifest herself in a visible form. And, from the left half of Lord Shiva, she appeared as Maa Siddhidatri, the giver of divine powers and perfections. This sacred union of Shiva and Shakti symbolizes the eternal truth that the cosmos is sustained by the balance of energy and consciousness, creation and power, devotion and divinity.

Significance of Day 9 of Navratri

The ninth day of Mahanavratri is known as Mahanavami. It is the third and final day of Durga Puja and holds immense spiritual significance. The day begins with Mahasnan and Shodashopachar Puja, marking the closure of the grand nine-day festive.

On this sacred day, Goddess Mata Durga is worshipped as Mahishasuramardini, the fierce form who killed the buffalo demon Mahishasura. It is believed that on Maha Navami, Maa Durga’s victory over Mahishasura was accomplished, symbolizing the eternal triumph of good over evil.

An important detail in the observance is the timing of rituals. If the Navami Tithi begins before Sanyakal on Ashtami, then Ashtami Puja and Navami Puja, including the auspicious Sandhi Puja, are performed on the same day. However, the sacred Durga Balidan is always carried out on Uday Vyapini Navami Tithi, with scriptures like Nirnaysindhu prescribing the Aparahna Kaal (afternoon) as the most appropriate time.

The highlight of Maha Navami is the Navami Homa, a deeply significant ritual performed at the conclusion of the Puja. This sacred yagya offering is believed to invite divine blessings, completing the circle of devotion and victory that Durga Puja represents.
